What are the Parabens?

Parabens are chemical groups used as preservatives in many cosmetics. These compounds and their salts are used primarily for their bactericidal properties.

The six main parabens which can be found in formulations are methylparaben, Ethylparaben, Propylparaben, Isobutylparaben, Butylparaben, and benzylparaben.
Their efficacy as preservatives, combined with their low cost, explains the use in most cosmetic products.

Although authorized preservatives, some argue the need to prevent their use since they could damage the skin, cause allergies and ocasional sensitiviness.

Some studies show possible skin penetration with likely carcinogens effects.

These compounds and their salts are used primarily as additives in foods.
